Matt Barnes is a Canadian photographer that is currently living in Toronto and is the father of two daughters. He started to realize that his passion of photography could become a career in high school when he had an internship at Silver Parrot Studio. After high school, Matt decided to go to college to study photography. He went to Sheridan College but later dropped out. All he wanted to do was photography, so he didn’t enjoy doing the non-photography classes which led him to his drop out. However, dropping out of college has not refrained him from becoming successful in his career. In his early stages of his career, he was an assistant to photographer Ian Campbell, and later moved on to doing bigger shots by himself with brands like Redbull, Virgin, Sony, Xbox, Budweiser, Pepsi, Jägermeister, Visa, Molson, Vogue, GQ, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Vibe, and more. He has also collaborated with big names like Snoop Dogg, Bradley Cooper, Nick Wooster, and Lexi Belle. Matt’s photographs are almost all portraits. He has a lot of black and white photos and doesn’t typically use a wide variety of colours. As well, he likes to use elaborate backgrounds and costumes to add to the photo. Matt and his photographs are very noteworthy because they are unique. In someway, every single one of his photos has something different about it that makes it extraordinary and remarkable. The way Matt focuses specifically on his subjects makes his images great. It is amazing that he can somehow make the background and costumes complex but still have all the attention on his subject. The compositional techniques Matt uses are balance and the rule of thirds. When he has only one subject, he typically balances the photo with the person in the middle of the image. Also, in almost all of this photographs, he uses the rule of thirds as a compositional technique. Using both of these techniques, and more, helps Matt create amazing and unique photographs which contributes to his title of being one of the best photographers in Canada.
